Here’s How to Speak Green for Green Building Planning and Construction

ChuckLohreKinsman Residence, Potterhill Homes

With apologies to a certain songwriter, it’s easy to be Green if you want to market to sustainably leaning homeowners. You just need to speak their language. In our example, we’re going to focus on the couple that would like to build a sustainable home. They are in their 50s and are in no rush to build. They’re not motivated exclusively by price and current style preferences for stainless steel appliances and granite countertops.

The City of Cincinnati leads the region with the most energy-efficient buildings. With the most generous tax abatement in the country for LEED Certification, the City encourages residents and commercial developers to build ‘green.’ To incentivize people to invest in the most energy-efficient building they can afford, Councilmember Laure Quinlivan sponsored changes to the city program’s structure.

Heather and James Kinsman were looking to relocate from the San Francisco Bay area to Heather’s hometown of Cincinnati, with Northside topping their list of desired neighborhoods. When they found a rare three-acre lot for sale there, they jumped at the chance to build their own “green” home, inspired by similar homes they’d toured in California.

It wasn’t easy. Heather, who now works in grants at the University of Cincinnati, and James, who’s studying to take the bar exam in February, spent years researching energy-efficient building techniques and finding the right professionals to help them implement their plans.

Completed last December, the 2,500-square-foot, LEED Silver certified home they share with daughter Shilo, 4, has already been featured on the 2012 Ohio Solar Tour and the 2012 Northside House Tour.
