Cincinnati, OH 10-26-22 – The The Frankenthaler Climate Initiative is the first grantmaking program of its kind that catalyzes climate change action at visual arts organizations. The grant will pay for an Investment Grade Audit to plan for the CAC to reach their 2030 District goal of reducing energy use by 50% by 2030.
The grant initiative was established in 2021 by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, in collaboration with Environment & Culture Partners and Rocky Mountain Institute.
Early analysis of the Zaha Hadid-designed Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art building indicates that the fossil fuels used to heat the building will not be able to meet the energy saving requirements needed to meet the Cincinnati 2030 District goals. The Cincinnati 2030 District is a membership organization with a mission to create a network of healthy, high-performing buildings across Greater Cincinnati. The initiative is sponsored by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 212 and facilitated by Green Umbrella, the region’s leading sustainability alliance.
The CAC, in partnership with ArtWave is exploring the possibility of building an arts community solar array to create an all-electric carbon free source to achieve the Cincinnati 2030 District goals. The solar array will generate stable and less expensive electric power, similar to what the City of Cincinnati has been able to do. Interim Director, Marcus Margerum agrees, “It’s the wave of the future.

The CAC brings art and the creative process to all people through exhibitions, performances, and experiences that open minds. The CAC is internationally known as a vital venue for cutting-edge contemporary art. The CAC is the only visual arts institution in Cincinnati solely dedicated to presenting art of this moment. Through interaction and free-choice learning, visitors develop critical thinking, creativity, and interpersonal skills.
