Betts House exhibit to explore ‘Soul of the City’ – Reception 8/10/12

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 07:00 AM PDT by Building Cincinnati

Part two of “The Art of the Built Environment”, a three-part exhibit series examining urban life, begins with an opening reception Friday evening August 10, 2012 from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the Betts House, located at 416 Clark Street in the West End.

The multimedia Soul of the City exhibit will showcase paintings, sculptures, mobiles, photography and fiber art in an examination of how a city’s history, architecture, residents and geography all play a part in giving the place a character all its own.

Artists include Leslie Alexandria, Carolyn Bjornson, Virginia Cox, Deborah Davidson, Bill Feinberg, Karen Feinberg, Sue Kemp, and Barb Patterson – all of the 5300 Group.

The artists will share the ideas behind their work at a 2 P.M. gallery talk at the Betts House on August 11. The exhibit will remain on view through September 22.

“We hope that, by sharing a diverse range of perspectives through art, these exhibits will cause people to think more about the physical places they interact with on a daily basis and learn to care, not only about the natural environment, but also about the one we have built,” Betts House Executive Director Julie Carpenter said in a prepared release.

From October 13 through November 29, Urban Landscapes will close out the series with an exploration of urban neglect and abandonment through the photography of Sherman Cahal, Zach Fein, Craig Moyer, and Ronny Salerno.

“The Art of the Built Environment” is made possible through a project support grant from ArtsWave.

The Betts House is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 A.M. to 2 P.M., as well as the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 12:30 P.M. to 5 P.M. Other days and times are available by appointment only.

Admission is $2 per person.
