The Green Living Member Circle of the regional U.S. Green Building Council is producing a series of “This is a Green Home” tours for 2015. They start in January, take off for the summer and continue in the Fall of 2015.

Cincinnati Business Courier’s greenest buildings list includes several large projects for major institutions, such as the Longworth Wing of the Cincinnati Art Museum. But LEED certification doesn’t have to mean big bucks. In fact, the cost of the No. 1 project – Lohre and Associates’ office rehab in Over-the-Rhine – totaled just $9,500.
Greater Cincinnati is on the leading edge of the green movement – maybe not in showy ways like curbside composting or light rail, but in the green you don’t see.
Cincinnati is the largest city in the country to get all of its electricity from alternative energy sources, and it has the third-most homes certified under the U.S. Green Business Council’s Leadership in Engineering and Design standards. The region is also a leader in LEED-certified schools.
“This is a happening place,” said Brewster Rhoads, executive director of the Green Umbrella. “We’re turning Mark Twain’s adage on its head. In many ways we are 10 years ahead, particularly compared to other Midwest cities.”
Volkswagen ‘Greened’ its Chattanooga Assembly Plant
A recent visit to CASTEXPO 2013 in St. Louis encouraged us to investigate what it would take to make a foundry LEED Platinum. A VW ad on 60 Minutes gave us the inspiration.
From the VW press release, “Volkswagen’s Chattanooga manufacturing plant has received a platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) green building certification program. The facility is the first and only automotive manufacturing plant in the world to receive the Platinum certification.”
With planning and a corporate education plan, high levels of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) can be achieved. LEED was created by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1993 to encourage sustainable building practices. The USGBC is a non-governmental organization. It has become accepted as the sustainable building certification standard by the U.S. Government. All government buildings are required to be LEED Certified. LEED is based on a 100-credit system and broken up into five categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environment Quality.
Cincinnati offers the most generous tax abatement in the country for LEED Certification, and it’s about to go to the next level. City Council will vote Wednesday on an ordinance to give a better tax break to those who invest in the most energy-efficient building they can afford.

The County purchased the Art Deco-style building (designed by the Cincinnati architectural firm Samuel Hannaford & Sons) in the late ‘80s to house county offices and Juvenile Court.

Green Learning Station Flower Signage Idea Germinating in Cincinnati – Green City of the West
The eight poster show will be on exhibit at the Green Umbrella Summit May 3, 2013. Then it will move to another of the venues illustrated on the posters.
The Queen City and environs are gaining national attention for green and sustainable efforts. An idea from the Green Learning Station of the Civic Garden Center of Cincinnati will identify greater Cincinnati’s stock of green buildings.
Thanks to some recent green-sky thinking, area residents and visitors should be able to point to the major buildings exemplifying sustainable energy and environmental design that are part of Cincinnati’s green building movement. The area will be “blooming” when a proposal to “plant” exterior signs in front of these sites becomes a reality. The project (Cincinnati Green Building Signage Project) is just another way the Queen City (and the city that sings) is moving forward as the Green City of the West. Beyond attracting architectural tourists (believe me, these folks exist), the colorful, eye-catching signage project will go the distance in promoting healthy environments – good for the planet and its people.
