Cincinnati Green Building Signage Project presents the Times Star Building
Hamilton County’s first Green project, 800 Broadway, Cincinnati, OH 45202
The County purchased the Art Deco-style building (designed by the Cincinnati architectural firm Samuel Hannaford & Sons) in the late ‘80s to house county offices and Juvenile Court.
The Green Learning Station of the Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati will showcase a proposed Green Building signage project in a display at Park+Vine Nov. 30 – Jan. 24, 2013. An opening reception will be held Friday, Nov. 30, 2012 – 6 to 8 p.m. at Park+Vine, 1202 Main Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202.
The Times Star building is one of the buildings that are part of the Cincinnati Green Building Signage Project. The following are some of the sustainable features of the building.
Site – The Greenest building is an existing one. The County has substantially reduced the use of new construction materials by renovating this structure.
Water Savings – Though challenging to Green an existing building, the U.S. Green Building Council provides a systematic way to approach the process. The Time Star Building has benchmarked existing water use and is documenting the improvements.
Energy Efficiency – The 16-story historic building, built in 1933 and now on the National Register, has been retrofitted with energy-efficient lighting as well as hot water and HVAC systems.
Materials – Material purchases such as consumable paper towels and bath tissue are made more sustainable by using brands with high recycled content and that are regionally manufactured.
Air Quality – Along with Green cleaning, and eco-friendly pest management, the building is an example of tax savings as well as the benefits of improved work performance for county employees.
